This was really where the inception of Misfit Matinee as a site. I mentioned that watching ads on my videos on YouTube doesn’t pay me anything. I would be good with that in isolation but now with YouTube actively making things worse for both the user and viewer so consistently I felt I needed more of a backup. I am playing around with the idea of adding ads to this site but mostly through affiliate links if possible allowing to me to keep control of what goes where. Even if I need to use more general AdSense ads they’ll be as minor as I can get them and still pay for the site. And at least in this case you’ll know that any ads you watch here go directly to supporting to the content you want to see and keeping available outside of Google’s ever closing network.
I seemed to have lost the thumbnail to this video so please bear with me while I find or recreate it.
Here’s the tools and sources from the previous description of the video:
I was planning to do a video about games but things broke so here’s this instead.
Here’s the open source tools I use:
Blocking Ads:
uBlock Origin: https://ublockorigin.com/
Get this one even if you do nothing else
NoScript: https://noscript.net/
If you want even more control then use this. Just be aware it will break sites so you’re going to have to get used to managing it. If you need access to the site you’ll usually be okay turning on the JavaScript that shares the URL and which ever one has CDN in the name
Browsers:
Firefox: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/
LibreWolf: https://librewolf.net/
I haven’t used this enough to have an opinion on it, I just wanted to throw it out as another non-chromium browser. It’s based on a fork of FireFox
OS:
Linux Mint: https://linuxmint.com/
If you have never tried Linux before this is where I would recommend you start.
Manjaro: https://manjaro.org/
If you have experience with Linux or can pick thinks up quickly this is a good option for gamers.
Nobara: https://nobaraproject.org/
This is my current Linux OS and makes setting up Linux for gaming with nVidia a lot easier than it would otherwise be. (I know, I know, use AMD. I just had this laptop for a while)
Open Source Software I Use:
If you’re recording anything you’re probably already using this
Audacity: https://www.audacityteam.org/
Same as above
Krita: https://krita.org/
Krita is open-source art software and is what I use for editing images and making thumbnails but it can do a lot more than that if your more artistically inclined.
Shotcut: https://www.shotcut.org/
This is what I used for putting the whole video together. It’s still growing and you’ll have to work around it’s quirks but it’s still usable.
The game you saw me playing was Pseudoregalia. It’s good and you should play it. I’ll probably do a short video on it.
